SCHOOL BOARD REPORTS
9/8/15
I am Emily Everest the Student Council President. I hope to work closely with the School Board while representing the students and help make this school year the greatest it has ever had!
We have elected all the new Class Officers and I will give you a list of who they are and who their sponsors are.
All the new officers received a copy of the Student Council Constitution and told what their roles are as Class Officers.
10/13/15
The Student Council sponsored Spirit Week and the winners were,
PJ Day-
Fashion Disaster Day-
Sports Fan Day-
Throwback Day-
Float winners were,
1st Seniors "Trump Them”
2nd Sophomores “Punish the Panthers”
3rd Junioirs “Cream of Panthers”
Homecoming Royalty were, Jenna Heine and Alex Wilson.
We are going to participate in Jean for Troops Day. We use hats instead of jeans. Students who make a donation to this veteran’s organization will be allowed to wear their hat in class on November 12th.
We discussed some goals for this year and we reviewed last year’s Student Council accomplishments. We are still working on this and will update you when we decide on what goals to focus on.
We discussed a few fund raising ideas and spoke to Superintendent Williams about what we can sell at break or after school. We also spoke with her about student clubs.
We are sponsoring a Halloween Costume contest for grades 7-12 on October 30th.
The Halloween Carnival is at the school on October 30th from 6:30-8:30 and everyone is welcome.
11/10/15
The Student Council sponsored a Halloween Costume Contest and the winners were:
Scariest- Blake Loomis (Scarecrow/Reaper)
Funniest- Aden Fletcher (Unicorn)
Most Creative- Abby and Kate Jackson (Remote Control and Television)
We are participating in Jeans for Troops Day. Tomorrow students can wear a hat in class if they make a donation to this program.
The Student Council has determined our Goals for the 2015-16 school years. They are:
Create a longer lunch period
Re-introduce the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program or a program like it.
Consider changing the block schedule to the traditional schedule.
We are planning a fund raising dance for both junior high and high school combined.
We will begin selling concessions at break again but will only be serving healthier items.
We reviewed why we fund raise and came up with some areas we will be look at helping to fund.
New elementary playground equipment
New furniture for the Wolverine Lounge
Someone in need in the community
Other needed equipment for the school
We are going to invite the new police officers to our next meeting for a meet and greet.
12/8/15
We reviewed the concession schedule for break. Mr Amdahl reminded students how to access the school website and find the schedule. We passed an amendment to the Student Council Constitution that deals with Class officers who don’t show up to run break. Classes will be warned once and upon missing a second time the class will be fined $25 for every time they miss thereafter.
We are planning the Christmas Gift Exchange. Students who would like to participate must donate a can of food that will be delivered to Social Services by Wednesday December 16. Name Drawing will be the following day.
We also planned the festivities for the event. Santa and the elves will be calling people up to receive their gift and if they want they can have their photo taken as a fund raiser for the Student Council. Classes will be making treats and each class will supply two champions for the Musical Chair Match. This will be followed up by the Ugly Sweater Contest and more gifts.
Under class business, the Sophomores are planning the Snow Ball Dance for Some time in January.
We would like to thank the entire school staff and School Board for all you have done this year to make the school year successful and wish everyone a Safe and Merry Christmas!
1/13/16
We had the gift exchange before Christmas and the winners for the sweater contest were:
Ugliest - Jillian Carter
Funniest - Easton Roose
Most Expensive - Drake Young
Most Creative - Cam Carter
The winning class for the Musical Chairs Match were the Seniors
We were able to collect food for Social Services in town and we purchased toys for a girl and boy from the Pick a Star program at first Security Bank.
We discussed how we might reward students for making the Honor Roll for the first semester. The majority of class officers would like to have the Fat Cat’s trip continued as a reward for working hard in school. We discussed the possibility of moving the date to later in the year so the Claws Ski Trip doesn’t overlap on the calendar.
We worked on the issue of open containers being brought into the school. We feel this issue has punished the majority for the mistakes of a few. Mary Margaret challenged the Student Council to come up with a way to keep this privilege. One idea we had was to have random checks as students enter using test strips that change color if alcohol is present. Another idea was to allow this privilege for grades 9-12 only.
If Mary Margaret would like, we will do a survey of students to find out what students think about possibly changing from a block schedule to
We postponed our meet and greet with the new Police Officers because one officer is training for 12 more weeks and the others are on different shifts. The chief says he will work out a time that would allow these officers to be available to meet with us latter in the year.
We would like to commend the work done by Mary Wilson and Becky Gallegos - Hollensbe for the lunch program. Many of the meals served to students are made from scratch using healthier ingredients that are still delicious.
The Sophomore Class is having their Snow Ball Dance on January 30 at the Holiday Inn.
2/9/16
We took a survey of grades 7-12 about class schedules for next year and compiled the results. The numbers indicate students favor the block schedule over the class every day schedule.
We would like to attend Fat Cat’s again as a first semester Honor Roll reward. We will coordinate with the administration for a date.
Snowball Dance royalty were Kyle Austad and Jillian Carter. The Sophomore Class would like to recognize School Board Chairman John Gospodarek for setting up and allowing the class to use his music equipment for the dance.
Superintendent Mary Margaret suggested we look at helping younger students by being a Big Buddy. This will allow 7-12 grade students to sign up to be a helpful mentor with elementary students. Once a month the buddies will meet and do an activity, lunch, etc. together.
We discussed the issue of students bringing drinks into the school. We decided the issue wasn’t about the drinks as much as it was about the size of drinks. We discussed how many ounces would be appropriate and looked at items like coffee and pop. Our recommendation is for 16 ounces or less.
In other class business the Freshman Sweat Heart Dance is planned for this Saturday at the school.
3/8/16
We have now set a date for the Honor Roll Fat Cat’s trip of April 20th. We were able to get a deal because they remembered us from last year and appreciated how West Yellowstone students behaved. Students will be able to see a movie, have lunch, golf, arcades, and bowl for twelve dollars. Students will leave at 8:30 and be back by 3:30 for track practice and the school bus.
We discussed the results of the class schedule survey and appreciate Superintendent Mary Margaret asking us to be involved in the decision process for class schedules next year.
We are sending out signup sheets for the students who would like to be involved in the Buddies program and hope to get started this month.
We are looking at the federal No Child Left Behind approved list of what can be sold in schools and see a number of items that we might start selling at break concessions. This would help by allowing us to both order and pick up these items right at school instead of someone having to go to Bozeman every month.
4/12/16
I don’t have much to report but what I have is very good. 48 students from grades 7-12 made the honor roll for the first semester!!! The Honor Roll field trip to Fat Cats in Rexburg is February 20th.
Due to training for new police officers it was decided to do a meet and greet with the new officers at the beginning of next school year. We could have an assembly for all classes and introduce/ask questions of the officers.
We reviewed the Worthy Student Award questions and decided to present a $200 award to one senior.
We are planning the end of the year picnic and today we decided what each class will bring. You are all invited to come and enjoy a hotdog with us on June 8.
The Junior Prom is Saturday April 23rd. Grand March is at the Wyndham at 7:00.
5/10/ 6
We read and discussed seven senior applications for the Worthy Student Award. We have selected one senior from the Class of 2016 based on their accomplishments and reflections of their school experience. The $200 award will be presented at graduation.
We discussed the procedures and requirements for running for Class Officers and Student Council Officers for the 2016-17 school years.
This is my last time reporting to the school Board and we would like to thank all of you and the administration for your help in giving students a voice in the school. Have a safe and fun filled summer!
